The Splintered Chat #10

It's that time of the week again...

Hopefully, your weekend is going to be chock full of what you need, whether that be rest and relaxation, or time to catch up on projects. For me, I just want more time. I need it because I waste it finding delightful gems like these:

Yep, this one is very useful in everyday English situations. In fact, I just used this expression the other day when I had AT&T explain my first phone bill.

If your weird doesn't lay in that direction, then you may like this. The New York Times recently did a feature on Al Jaffee's fold-ins for Mad magazine, something he has done since the 1960s. If you aren't familiar with the term, "fold-ins" are those nifty sight gags on the inside back cover of Mad magazines where you have to fold the art up to reveal the secret picture. Sometimes obvious, but most times insidiously clever. This is an excellent usage of Flash technology. I hope you enjoy it.

Have a good weekend. Good luck with your personal goals and remember to keep your spirits up. A positive attitude will help you see options a negative attitude won't notice.

This begins my open forum for the weekend. Comments will close when I remember to do it, possibly Monday, but I'm not guaranteeing anything.

What a fantastic night I had. My daughter (the Elf) and I went up to Ogden, about an hour away, to sit in on an Irish session. It was challenging, but fun. We didn't know most of the music but played along as best as we could. It was the first time I've sat in with other musicians. (High School Band didn't count. :) Ever done anything like that?

On another subject, I've been watching my subscription numbers bounce all over the place. Not sure what's happening there. Up over 250 one moment, down to 216 the next. Hey guys. Summer's not for another month or two. That's when the numbers are supposed to take a dive. ;) Feed numbers are more mumbo jumbo than science. They represent the average number of polling RSS readers for the day. If 50 people simultaneously decide to turn off the computer for a day, my stats drop by 50. This is why stats dip over the weekend. Many of my readers subscribe to me from their work computers. I use the Feedburner stats as a loose metric of how well I'm connecting with people.

OK, enough geekery. I'm going to finish up Monday's article, poke at my current story a bit, then go to bed.

So far my weekend ranks fairly low in the "How Great Was Your Weekend?" scale.

Finished "The Light Fantastic", which was good, but which forgot to be a comedy towards the end. It became fairly dark by comparison, but it ended on an upbeat. "Good Omens" on the other hand, by Terry Pratchet and Neil Gaiman, failed to engage me. I gave up by page 22. I know it is generally regarded as being brilliant, but brilliant apparently is defined by irreverent satire and I've read things like that before. I didn't find a sort of "What's Up, Doc?" done with babies, with the AntiChrist no less, all that funny, though the prose was creative. Not my cup of tea, I suppose. Maybe I just wasn't in a dark enough humor.

I am exhausted, and hanging on for dear life in the last month before graduation. I will come back to comment more (since you're begging so much), but you'll have to be a little patient. Three more weeks!

:)

Ha ha! I'm not begging. I just decided to treat this chat as a journal of sorts. If people responded, then great; if not, no worries.

Good luck with your studies. That's the important thing.

Wow, Claire. I don't ever remember begging. Are you sure I wasn't kidding? Or being sarcastic?
